Student Spotlight

Name: Yugam
Class: 7
School: Shri Swaminarayan Primary School
Area: Bhavnagar, Gujarat
Yugam now in class in 7, has been receiving educational sponsorship from AASSTHA since 2023. His mother, Shital, supports the family by working as a domestic worker. His father works as a daily wage worker in the ship-breaking yard. He barely earns 5000 a month, and Shital earns another 3000 or so. The family qualifies for free rations from the PDS system and also gets some support from the Jain community. Even with these subsidies, the combined monthly income of Shital and her husband is barely enough to meet their basic survival. Through tears, she once shared how she can never even buy a little toy or something special to eat for her son.
For years, Shital also took care of the ageing mother-in-law, who passed away recently after a prolonged illness. As her husband was the only son, other social obligations had to be fulfilled, such as the care of relatives who came to the city for treatment. It meant loss of wages as both husband and wife are daily wage workers. Not to mention that extra members have to be fed for the days that they stay with them.
Shital chose to marry outside her caste and was disowned for several years by her family and community. Being a determined young lady, all she wanted was to ensure that she gave her son a better chance at life. She wanted him to study in a trust-run private school which offers good quality education in her city. That’s when she approached AASSTHA to support the school fees for her son, Yugam. Her request was to support the education of her son so that he could secure a decent job. In the year 2023, AASSTHA paid Rs. 16,000 towards his class 5 fees. In 2024, an amount of Rs. 17,600 was paid towards his class 6 fees, and in 2025, an amount of Rs. 18,800 was paid towards his class 7 fees. Yugam manages to get about 50% marks through his efforts.
With the continued support of AASSTHA, Yugam is assured that he will complete his education
